My Blogging Journey so Far
Let me share my blogging journey with you how I started blogging.
When I passed out from B.tech then I joined an MNC company to work. I worked in that company for a year, after that I felt that this job is not good for me.
Because I didn’t like working under anyone. I want to become my own boss. I was following one routine daily: wake up in the morning, go to the office and return home in the evening.
It was a boring life for me.
Then I realize, I’ve to do something different leaving this job.
Then what!
I searched on the internet, how to work online and make money. That time, I heard about blogging.
I watched many videos and read articles about blogging and saw people making lots of money from blogging.
Then, I started my first blog in 2019. And now I’m running many blog websites and making money online.
Here you can see the screenshot of my earning proof from blogging:

This is earning from affiliate marketing in one month.
In the end, I want to say to you ‘Yes’ blogging is a good platform to make money online. You only need time and patience.
10 Basic Steps to Start a Blog in 2023
These all are important steps to start a blog with no experience. We’ll discuss each point briefly but before we start let’s see a few questions that all newbie bloggers think about before making a blog site.
What is a Blog Exactly?

A blog is the quickest way to share your ideas with the world. You can use it to build your personal brand and voice or just to share funny pictures of your pets and craft projects with friends. Whatever your blogging motivation, you’ll find success if you follow these tips on how to start a blog.
We’ll cover what makes up a blog, how to get started, choosing the right platform, and more! When you’re done reading this guide on how to start a blog, you’ll be ready to publish your first entry in no time!
Why Should You Start a Blog?

It’s easy. It’s cheap. It’s fun! And it can give you—yes, YOU!—the chance to voice your opinions and be heard by people all over the world! But what if I told you there was a better reason for starting a blog than fame and fortune?
A way to make real connections with real people. Imagine that every time you share something personal, or write something interesting, or post something witty…people actually come to you for advice. People ask questions about things that are important to them—relationships, jobs, health concerns…even their pets (seriously!)
That sounds like pretty good motivation to start blogging.
Is Blogging Still Profitable?
Yes!
But it depends on you how much you are curious about blogging.
If you think just make a blog website and write 10-20 articles on it and earn money from it then blogging is not profitable for you. You should quit your blogging dream.
Blogging can be profitable only when you’re serious about it.
A year ago, people started blogging as a hobby. But nowadays, many successful bloggers quit their job and become a full-time blogger and he/she makes good enough money from it.
How Much Money Required to Start a Profitable Blog?
Good question!
If you’re estimating the budget to start a blog then It will depend on your goals and the type of blog you want to start. It will cost you around $40-$60 to start a blog in 2022.
At this cost, you can make your own blog website. But, if your requirement is more then you have to increase your budget. We’ll discuss below how you can minimize your expenses.
How Start a Profitable Blog from Scratch
This section will teach you how to start a blog step-by-step. I’m going to tell you only those steps that I followed a year ago to start my blogging journey.
At the end of this post, you’ll have your blog up and running.
Let’s start a blog!
1). Pick a Right Niche (Topic)

Finding your niche is critical in order to start making money from your blog. If you can’t find topics that people are searching for, you’ll never make any money online.
This is the first step where you’ve to decide your niche. Niche stands for topics that you are going to cover in your blog. Also, you can say that niche belongs to your fav subject that you’re passionate about.
Nowadays, if you do not choose the right niche then you may fail in blogging.
So, selecting the right topic is very important for starting a profitable blog for the long term.
Now, the question is:
How to find the right topic for a blog?
Check out these tips for finding topics (Niche) for blogs that will make money and how to get started with each one.
Make a list of your favorite topics – Take a piece of paper and write three to four (at least) topics that are your favorite and you are capable of writing anything about it.
For example:
If you’re capable of writing about tech, fashion, recipe, science, etc. it means you’ve knowledge about that topic, you can talk about it for hours and you love it. Similar, just make a list of your fav topics that you know better than anyone else.
Pick a topic that you usually read about – Sometimes it happens that when we stop studying about a subject (topic), then our interest ends with that subject and we do not know much about it.
Pick your interesting topic that you made a list in the past section.
So, the good idea is to select a topic that you usually read about in your daily life. The topic which you read about all the time is something that interests you.
Note: If you’re selecting only single topics, for example, technology. It means you’re choosing a “Niche” topic. And, if you’re selecting multi topics, it means you’re selecting a “Multi-Niche” topic. I recommend you to make a “niche” website where you talk and write about only one topic. It will help you get success in blogging as fast as you think.
However, selecting the appropriate niche is the fist and the most crucial step for starting a new blog.
2). Choose Your Blogging Platform

Now, it’s time to choose the right platform where to start your blogging journey.
Creating and publishing a high-quality blog can be expensive. While you can easily start blogging for free by using hosted platforms like WordPress or Tumblr, these typically provide very little technical support.
WordPress is still the most popular option out there today, with plenty of custom templates available in case you need help creating an appealing design.
I personally use WordPress, but if you’re looking for something more affordable and DIY friendly, consider making a website using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
You should have knowledge about coding. If you need a website, please contact us.
Apart from this, most Bloggers had started blogging on the WordPress platform, even I. Because of its simplicity and ease of use.
Do you know!
Over 40% of websites on the internet are powered by WordPress. Once you’ll read half of this article, you’ll be able to know more about WordPress and how to build websites with WordPress platform.
Don’t be confused with WordPress.com and WordPress.org because both are different platforms. You can read the difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org.
3) Select Your Domain Name That Gets Result

Selecting a domain name for your blog or business is a very important part because people will know your blog with that domain name.
With the blog domain name, anyone can visit your site and overview your blog content.
For example,
My blog domain name is ‘urpn.org’. You can enter my blog in the search engine and can visit our site.
Similarly, you should have selected a unique and blog related blog domain name.
But the question is, how to choose a domain name that gets results?
So, before selecting a domain name, you should remember few points which are following:
- Choose a domain name that is easy to type
- Keep it as short as possible
- Include keyword (for example, if you’re starting business about glass replacement then you should choose domain like glassrepair.com or glassreplacement.com)
- Avoid using numbers and hyphens
- Domain name should be easy to remember
- Choose domain extension that fits your brand (e.g .com, .in, .org, .net)
Once you’ve selected your domain name, move to the next step. In the next step, I will show you how to buy a free custom domain name.
Use this Resources: How to Choose the Best Domain Name
Pro Tips: Always choose .com extension because people always put .com after the domain name. With this extension, you can target your audience all over the world. And, if you are making your blog site for a particular region such as India, then you can use .in extension for your blog website.
4) Host Your Blog with Fastest Web-Hosting

We need a store or space from where we can start our business. Similarly, to keep safe and secure our blog content, we required hosting.
Web-hosting is an online server or storage where you can store your all files securely so that people can access your website anytime from anywhere.
There are many hosting providers available on the market. But selecting a fastest and affordable hosting plan is a crucial decision.
Because hosting will decide how your site performs whenever user’s will interact with your website.
The web host comes with different features, plans and pricing structures, it can be hard to pick out what’s best for you.
In this tutorial I will be showing you how to start a blog using shared hosting, because it is the most popular and fastest web hosting plan (start from $2.99/month).
The web host I recommend, and one I show you how to use in this guide, is Hostinger. I personally use Hostinger and I recommend them for all newbie bloggers.
If you’re a new blogger and have limited budget then you can go with Shared hosting which is affordable and recommend hosting from Hostinger.
And, if you want to lose your pocket then I recommend you go with cloud hosting which is reliable and fastest web hosting.
I’m using Hostinger web hosting because:
- The company has five star reviews.
- They will give your custom domain name for free with hosting.
- It provides you a 30 day money back guarantee if you’re unsatisfied for any reason.
- They offer you a reliable web hosting plan, depending on your budget and size of your website.

Once your payment is completed, you will get the option to choose your domain name.
In the 3 steps, we’ve already selected a domain name. You have to check whether this domain is available or not. If it is, then enter your domain and move to the next step.
After purchasing hosting and domain, now your blog is ready to set up.
Note: If you’re buying a domain name from the other provider then you’ve to connect your domain with a hosting provider company to build your blog website. But, for saving money, buy a domain name with a hosting provider because it gives you a free domain for the first year.

6) Customize your site

This section will let you know how to design your blog site.
Customizing a blog is the crucial part because readers will see how your site looks and this is the first impression which will motivate your reader to visit the site again or subscribe for a newsletter.
There are various things considered while customizing the blog such as selecting theme, navigation menu, typography style, and many more.
We’ll see each and every point to designing a blog site.
Step-by-step Guide to WordPress customization:
Follow the following step to customize your WordPress blog site.
Step 1 : Login to WordPress Dashboard
If you’ve already logged in from the previous step 5 then it’s good otherwise to login your WordPress dashboard type yoursitedomain.com/login in the browser URL box.
For example, if my site domain name is trytopbest.com then I’ll type trytopbest.com/login.

After typing the URL, hit enter. It will redirect to the WordPress admin login page.

Type your ‘username’ and ‘password’ that you created in the previous step 5. And click ‘Log in’.
You’ll land on your WordPress dashboard from where you can design your site.
Step 2 : Customize WordPress Screen
This is the very first screen that you’ll see after login to WordPress.

This is the ‘WordPress dashboard’ where too many options are available which is not good.
So, the second stage after login to the dashboard are customizing screen options which you’ll find on the top right corner of the screen (as shown in the below picture).

Click ‘Screen options’ to open settings.

The checkBoxes are the ones that appear as elements on your WordPress dashboard.
If you’d like to keep any of these screen elements, simply leave them checked. You can uncheck the rest of the boxes to make them disappear from the dashboard view.
I recommend unchecking all the widgets. Your screen will look clean and clear.

Note: If you want to show some widgets at your dashboard screen then you can leave them checked and you can drag and drop the boxes.
Step 3 : Customize WordPress Settings
Most new bloggers skip the WordPress setting options but it is also important for your WordPress site.
You’ve to do little changes on settings. We’ll see each option one by one.
You can locate the ‘settings’ menu on the right sidebar of the dashboard.

General Settings:

This is the basic settings for the site. If you’re not using a logo on your site then you must have ‘Site title’ which will show at the top of your site.
This is also the name which will show at the top-left corner of your WordPress admin dashboard.
On the ‘Tagline’ box, you can write a short description about your site.
Make sure the WordPress address and site address URL should be the same. If not, then you might get an error. Lastly select your site language and click ‘save changes’. It’s done in the general settings.
Permalink Settings:

WordPress offers you the ability to create a custom URL for your site permalinks and archives. Custom URL structures can improve the usability, aesthetics, and forward-compatibility of your site.
A number of permalink settings are available but by default ‘Post Name’ is the good way to structure your links. It keeps your URL structure simple and easy to return visitors to recall.
But it’s up to you what URLs structures you want to choose for your blog post and page. Might be you want to show date or category in your URL then you can go with that settings.
Privacy Settings:

When it comes to getting Google AdSense approval then the ‘Privacy’ page plays an important role. You can create a privacy policy page through a third party website and add to your site.
But, WordPress gives you by default a privacy page. Simply click use this page to use the privacy policy page at your site. We’ll see in this guide, how you can create an important page for your site.
Step 4 : Choosing and Customizing the WordPress Theme
Now it’s time to customize the WordPress theme. Selecting a responsive, lightweight and fastest theme is very crucial for a site.
Because, the theme will decide how your site will look to your audience. Also, a good presentation of the site will improve readability and get user attention.
So, you need to choose what theme you need to install on your WordPress site.
There are thousands of WordPress themes available on the Internet. But don’t go with any random theme.
I’m personally using the GeneratePress Premium theme on my site here at URPN.org. It is a very powerful, lightweight and responsive theme. The free version of this theme is also great as other premium themes.
I highly suggest you go with GeneratePress or Astra themes.
As a beginner, the free versions of these themes are enough, later on, you can purchase the premium version once you earn from blogging.
Let’s see how to install the GeneratePress free theme and customize it.
1. Install a Free Theme
Go to Appearance > Theme > Add new.

Now, search for GeneratePress and click ‘Install’.

After installing it, click ‘Activate’.

Your free theme has been successfully activated.
2. Customize free theme
Now, it’s time to customize the theme. To do this, go to Appearance > Customizer.

This page allows you to customize and modify the appearance of the theme on your site.
It comes with lots of options to customize the theme. As we install a free theme then you’ll get limited features and customizing options to play with.
I will be showing the most important things you need to do, in the customizer page.
Under customizer > Site identity, you need to upload the site logo and blog tagline.

In the colors options, you need to select body, header, buttons, content, and footer bar colors. You can choose colors as per your comfort.

Under typography, you can choose font and typography. Most popular typography for blog sites are popins, georgia, and roboto. It also depends on you what typography style you choose for your blog site.

Actually, this is a free theme so you’re not getting font size, weight options here. So, if you want more typography options, then you need to go with the GP premium plugin.
Like these, there are lots of options available to customize your theme design.
3. Set up Important Plugins
WordPress plugins allow you to add some extra features to your site so that you can make a beautiful website.
For example, you can add a table of content, drag & drop page builder, image optimization, site backup and more with the help of plugins.
So, in this section you will see which plugin you need to install as a beginner.
When you install WordPress for the first time, it comes with a by default plugin. Just uninstall and delete all the plugins.
Make sure you install some plugins so that your site is SEO-friendly, fast and customizable.
Note: If you install more plugins then it may slow down your site which is not a good search engine. So, always try to minimize the plugin.
Here are some of the plugins that you install on your site.
Yoast SEO : This plugin will help you to write SEO-friendly content and fully optimize your WordPress site. There are tons of SEO plugins available but it is simple and easy to use. The free version of Yoast SEO is enough for a WordPress site.
Elementor or Thrive Architect or Beaver Builder: These are the drag and drop page builder plugins that help you build attractive landing pages for your site. I’m using Elementor pro on my site to write blog posts and create landing pages for lead generation. It also comes with a free version and as a beginner, the free version is sufficient for you.
Easy Table of Content : It is a featured focused plugin which allows you to insert a quick navigation (table of contents) into your posts, pages and custom post types. Users can easily jump to the heading that he/she wants to read.
Jetpack : This plugin helps you to make your site safe and secure with bad people. It also helps to speed up your site and drive traffic to your site.
EWWW Image Optimizer : It allows you to compress the image file size without losing image quality. The larger file size image can increase your site loading time. However, this plugin is very helpful for image optimization.
WP Super Cache : There are dozens of caching plugins available for WordPress but I strongly recommend using WP super cache.
Note: Don’t use GPL or cracked themes and plugins for WordPress. It may destroy your site. So, always keep your site safe and secure by using trusted themes and plugins.
It is all about customizing blog sites. We’ve successfully done some changes on the settings and installed some plugins. Now, move to the next steps.
7) Create Important Pages

Most people usually skip to add some of these pages and start publishing articles on the WordPress blog. But, it’s not a good habit.
Before publishing any articles on your blog site, it’s very important for you to add some essential pages.
These are the essential pages that are important for any website.
- Homepage
- Blog Page
- About Us
- Contact Us
- Privacy & Policy
- Terms & Conditions page
- Disclaimer page
- Affiliate Disclosure (if you want to do affiliate)
Creating all of these pages on your website is a good practice.
Let me show you how you can create these pages and add them to the website.
In the about us page, you can write about you and what is your website for. And on the contact us page, you can put your contact information (email, phone number or company address) so that when someone wants to contact you, they can!
You can get help with my about us and contact us pages.
The important thing is how to create a privacy policy, and disclaimer page for WordPress site.
Let start with privacy policy page:
Go to the privacy policy generator and fill the company name, website name and website URL and click next.

Check the boxes as shown in the below picture and click next again.

Note: If you’re not using cookies on your website then select ‘No’ option. And if you’re going to show ads on your site from a third party site (except Google) then select ‘Yes’ option.
Select your ‘country’ and ‘state’ and type your email address (through which people can contact) and click ‘Generate my privacy policy’.

Your privacy policy has been generated automatically, just copy the privacy policy content and go to your WordPress dashboard > Pages > Add new.
Now, type ‘Privacy Policy’ on the title box and paste privacy policy content that you copy in the previous step.

Finally, click on ‘Publish’ on the top right corner of your screen. Your privacy policy has been successfully published and added to your site.

Similarly, you can generate disclaimer, and terms and conditions pages.
One other important setting for your WordPress site is to set a custom page as a homepage.
On WordPress, by default all the blog posts you publish will be stacked chronologically in the homepage of your website.
If you want your site homepage to be static and posts to be published on a separate blog page, you need some changes on settings.
But before that, we’ve to create ‘Homepage’ and ‘Blog’ pages.
You can simply go to Pages > Add New page inside the WordPress admin to create a new page (similarly as shown above to create privacy policy page).
Let’s give this page a title ‘Home’ for the homepage and ‘Blog’ for the blog page and publish it. You will see these pages on your pages section.

Now, let’s set up these two pages as a Homepage in WordPress.
To do this, go to settings > reading.

Select ‘Home’ in the homepages and ‘Blog’ in the posts page and click ‘Save Changes’.
If you look at URPN.org, we’ve a homepage and also a blogging page. I suggest you also do the same.
You can design these pages using page builders like Elementor or Beaver Builder.
And also create the remaining pages that I mentioned above. After doing this, move to the next steps.
8) Create First Valuable Content

Now, it’s time to create and publish some valuable content so that people can know about the site.
Before publishing any content on the site, let’s overview the post section of the WordPress site.
Go to posts >> Add New from the left navigation menu.

Once you click Add new, you’ll see the WordPress post edit section.

This is the place from where you can start writing blog posts.
The first section (Add title) is for writing the title (heading) of a blog post. Your title should be eye catchy and not more than 60 words long.
And the second section is for writing about your topic. Your content should be high-quality, SEO-friendly and easy to understand.
You can include sub-heading, images (copyright free images), internal and external links to your blog post to make it quality content.
Try to write 1000-3000 words long content, as a beginner. You can write over 3000 words long also but it will depend upon your topic.
You can use word counter tools to count words on your blog posts.
For example, On URPN.org, I plan to publish at least one blog post per week around 4000-10,000 words depending upon the topic. Again the word count of content depends upon the niche you are blogging in, broader the niche you need to post more often.

Note: When it comes to publishing SEO-friendly content then always try to write your own content (it should not be copyright content), and use copyright free images (use pexels.com or Canva.com).
9) Connect Site With Google Search Console

Adding a website to Google search console is a pretty simple process. You can do it by following the following steps.
Let’s first overview, what is Google search console?
What is Google Search Console?
Google Search Console is a free tool offered by Google which helps you to monitor activity on your site such as site traffic, issues and performance.
With the help of this tool, you can optimize your content to get a better position in the search engine. Also, you can see which post gets more clicks. However, if you want to rank your site and post on the search engine, then you must integrate with the Google Search console.
How to add site to Google Search Console
The section will guide you on how to connect Google search console with website.
First, you need to have a Google search console account, don’t have an account then sign up for a new Google search console account. Once you’ve done that, follow the steps below:
Step 1 : Go to Google search console, click ‘Start Now’ and login, if needed.

Step 2 : Click ‘Add property’ from the drop-down menu. You can add up to 1000 properties to your Google Search Console account.

Step 3 : Select property type, enter site URL and click continue.

There are two methods available here to add your site to the search console. The first method is ‘Domain’ and another one is ‘URL prefix’.
The domain option is the easiest way but harder to verify it with DNS. So, in this example, we’ll choose the second option which is the URL prefix.
Make sure to put the complete URL in that box. For example, if your site URL is https://yoursitedomain.com/ then you’ve to put a complete URL. Don’t forget to add / at the end of the URL.
Once you type the URL, click continue.
Step 4 : Copy the meta tag.
Now, copy the entire meta tag that is generated by Google Search Console and paste it inside your theme <head> section.

Step 5 : Paste HTML Tag in the <head> section.
You need to paste the HTML tag into your theme header section. To do this, go to Appearance >> Theme File Editor >> Theme header and paste it after the <head> tag (as shown in the below picture).

After pasting the HTML tag, click ‘Update File’ at the bottom left-corner.
Step 6 : Click Verify
Now, go back to Google Search Console, and click verify.

Congratulations! You’ve connected your website to Google Search Console.
Once you’ve done the process, you can check your verification tag whether you submitted the right tag or not.
How to check verification tag in Google Search Console
You can check search console verification tag easily by following the steps below:
Step 1 : Go to Google Search Console, select domain.

Step 2 : Click ‘Settings’ from the left-side menu and select ownership verification.

Step 3 : Click on the HTML tag and see if the verification tag matches.
